Designing at Bango

Four years shaping the products and foundations behind mobile payments.

As Bango’s sole designer, I worked across UX, UI, prototyping and frontend delivery — from merchant analytics and checkout journeys to internal tools and shared foundations. I worked closely with Product and Engineering to turn technical systems and commercial ideas into clear, usable products.

Designing at Bango

Four years shaping the products and foundations behind mobile payments.

I led the research and redesign of ieso’s Patient Therapy Site, used by thousands of NHS patients to access typed therapy. By simplifying onboarding, clarifying unfamiliar clinical processes and making the experience more accessible and supportive, I helped more people move from referral into treatment and remain engaged.

01 · MERCHANT ANALYTICS · LAUNCHED

Making Payment Performance Easier to Read

Bango Dashboard gave merchant and developer teams a live view of sales and transactions: where payments succeeded, where they failed and where performance could improve.

THE STARTING POINT

Many Requests, No Shared View

Customer requests, commercial priorities and technical constraints were scattered across conversations and teams. Some of the most requested features could not be supported by the existing data structure, so I worked with Product and Engineering to define the roadmap before redesigning the interface.

WHAT I DID

Turned the Backlog Into a Product Direction

I documented the requests and evidence behind them, sized the work with Engineering and created a shared plan for the quarter. I then designed, tested and helped build a responsive product that solved the immediate needs without closing off what came next.

IN USE

The redesigned Dashboard launched for merchant and developer teams including Mozilla, BlackBerry, Microsoft and Supercell.

A responsive view of payment performance, from headline measures to individual transactions.

02 · CHECKOUT JOURNEYS · LAUNCHED IN MULTIPLE CONTEXTS

Making a Complex Payment Feel Simple

The Payment Flow sat between merchants, mobile operators and customers. It had to adapt to different brands, devices and user states without ever feeling like a separate product bolted onto the purchase.

THE DESIGN PROBLEM

One Flow, Many Conditions

The journey needed to cover recognised customers, mobile-number entry, verification, confirmation, success, failure and exception states. Each merchant or operator could also bring their own branding.

WHAT I DID

A White-Label Journey That Stayed Coherent

I designed responsive journeys and reusable states that could take on merchant and operator branding while preserving a clear path through the payment. Several versions were released across different customer and operator contexts.

INSIDE THE PLATFORM

Designing the Things Customers Never Saw

Some of the most useful work sat behind the visible product: tools and foundations that helped Bango teams understand, build and operate a technically complex platform.

CONCEPT MOVED INTO DEVELOPMENT

Making Integration Logic Easier to Understand

‘Project Jarvis’ aimed to replace hand-written integrations with a configuration-driven tool. Working closely with the systems architect, I broke a sprawling technical interface into manageable steps and added a map showing how its parts connected. I designed, prototyped and tested the experience, then built the frontend components.

USED BY DESIGN AND ENGINEERING

Building the Frontend Foundation

Bango’s products had accumulated inconsistent patterns and one-off frontend code. I audited the interfaces, defined reusable components and built Keshiki: a documented CSS framework that engineers and I used to make new interfaces more quickly and consistently. This taught me a lot about CSS architecture and systems thinking — lessons that still shape how I approach design systems.

New Directions

Making New Product Ideas Tangible

Some projects launched; others helped test early commercial ideas. In both cases, I used visual artefacts and prototypes to give teams something concrete to discuss.

Launched Project

Bango Grid

Bango Grid gave app stores a clearer way to compare carrier-billing markets, bringing market data, planning and management tools into one web-based service. I helped turn the underlying spreadsheet into a filterable visual product, iterating rapidly around customer meetings before its launch and demonstration at Mobile World Congress in 2015.

Concept and Prototype

Social Payments

I explored a peer-to-peer currency concept through UX comics, user types, flows and interactive prototypes. The comics made an abstract commercial idea easier to picture and helped the leadership team discuss how it might work in people’s lives.

Ask Until the System Makes Sense

Bango taught me how to work inside a highly technical product company: ask basic questions until the system makes sense, make ideas tangible early and stay close enough to delivery to improve the details that matter. It was also where product design and frontend delivery became part of the same job for me — not separate stages handed from one team to another.
